Many thanks to those parents who attended our Substance Use Information Night on Tuesday.   TPD Site Resource Officer Mark Hassoldt, Counselor Colleen Ecker from the Thelma McMillen Treatment Center and three young panelists, who shared their stories with us, gave a riveting presentation on a topic that too often is addressed too late with our kids.

PLEASE, if you missed this evening, plan to attend the Substance Abuse Information Night at South High School on Wednesday, November 16 at 7:00 in the library.

PARENT NIGHT - Substance Use Prevention, Tuesday, October 25, 7:00 pm, RMS cafeteria

If you think that your middle-schooler is too young for you to worry about drugs and alcohol, YOU ARE WRONG. • Statistics from a survey given to TUSD students two years ago:

  • 7th grade = 12%
  • 9th grader = 36%
  • 11th grader = 51%
  • 29% of 7th graders have ridden in a car with someone who had been drinking alcohol
  • 7th graders believe, on average, 25% of their classmates have tried marijuana
  • 35% of 11th graders have been "high" or "wasted"
  • In a normal school week, 43% of 7th graders are at home alone after school at least one day a week

ALL of South High's expulsions last year were for 2nd offense drugs/alcohol.
